The features of a flow meter will guide you on how to select one suitable for your firm. Some people need a standard flow meter, while others look for a pulse flow meter. Whichever the case, there are some common aspects you should focus on.

Accuracy

The accuracy of a flowmeter is a crucial aspect to check. First, some industries need high levels of accuracy, and you can’t compromise on errors and variance to avoid mass poisoning and huge losses. Thus, if you need highly accurate readings, you should invest in highly-accurate meters.

Some firms need just an estimate. They can invest in cheap meters as they give reliable data with no need for high accuracy.

Repeatability

Accurate measurements alone are not enough, and a flow meter should produce accurate measurements for a long time.

Repeatability is crucial in sensitive firms like medical, food and beverage, oil and gas, etc. When you have constant flow at the inlet, the meter should give you constant readings as long as the fluid traits are constant.

Flow Range

The flow of fluids can not be constant throughout. Sometimes, you will experience a surge, and other times, the flow rate will be below. A meter should accommodate the flow range that your form produces.

You can only estimate the flow range of your fluids with the help of an engineer. Thus, you should consult them before you purchase the flow meter. Alternatively, you can ask them about the range that the pipes can carry during installation.

K-Factor

Pulse flow meters have an aspect called the k-factor. It’s the ratio of pulses per unit volume. The pulses that get to the transmitter are converted into electrical signals, and the meter uses the k-factor to convert the pulses into a readable flow rate measurement.

Linearity

When the flow is dependable on the k-factor, then it is considered as a linear flow. You can get this feature in pulse flow meters only, and other flow meters depend on whether you can gauge the flow rate in one direction or both directions.

If you can change the direction of the flow at any time, you need a flow meter that can work from both directions. A linear flow meter can be tricky as it will need reinstallation anytime you change the direction of the flow.

Type of Fluid

Different flow meters work with specific types of fluids. Thus, it would help look for a meter compatible with your fluid type and all its traits. Meters that work with water-like fluids are the most common. However, some specifics need to withstand corrosion, work against viscosity, and work with extreme temperatures and pressures. Thus, you need to check a meter that will serve you right.

Materials of Construction

Meters have different materials. Each material determines the type of fluids they can deal with- Corrosive fluids need corrosion-resistant materials. Also, some materials can lose shape due to extreme heat levels and pressure. Ensure your choice matches well with your fluid traits. You can work with an expert to select the best flow meter.

Hygiene Requirements

The medical field, food, and beverage, and wastewater industries are sensitive to humans. It would help if you had a meter that has high hygiene standards to protect the masses. Check the hygiene requirements of your firm and select the flow meter that addresses your needs.

Conclusion

Different types of flow meters address different needs in every firm. Pulse flow meters are also crucial in some firms. Select the best meter to meet your needs. The aspects of the flow meter will guide you to the right choice.
