Flow switches are mechanical appliances used to regulate the flow of gases or liquids through a certain channel. If the volume too high or low, the flow switches will activate. They can also monitor the rate at which the liquid is flowing since it will raise the alarm if the liquid is flowing too high or low.
This will protect the pump since an electrical signal will be sent to an electric controller. Flow switches are generally used to control the flow of liquids or gas.
How Flow Switches work
How it works will depend on the type of flow switch, most of them use a magnetic trigger or paddle. This primary device is connected to a way where the liquid or gas is passing through. The passing liquid or gas will rotate the primary device, which will send signals to the transducer.
The signal will be passed to the transmitter, then the transmitter will measure the readings, and if any mechanical behaviors need to be adjusted, it will work on it.
Therefore, flow switches will rule the flow rate of liquids through the whole system or a specific one; the flow switches will also make sure that the flow is within the required areas. In any case, the flow rate is high or low; it will stop the action by witching the alarm or diverting the flow.
Some flow switches such as ultrasonic do not have a physical paddle, so they work by bouncing the signal back off the monitored medium.
Test and Installation of Flow Switches
To install flow switches, the following rules should be followed.
• Should be installed on a straight section of the duct
• The length of the pipe should be perfect for behind and in front of the switch.
• Do not wire a flow switch near the pipe's bend or anywhere in the pipe where the flow rate might be affected.
Installation of the flow switch will depend on the type used since there are different types. You can mostly confirm if the flow switch is working by checking how it responds when it starts or stops.
Types of Flow Switches
There are different types of flow switches, these includes
Flow switches for water and fluids
Flow switch for water pumps prevents the pump from dry in case there is water failure.
Flow Switches for Gas and Air
flow switches are used for air filtration and supply system. These flow switches are designed such that they are either mechanical or varieties that are non-intrusive.
Paddle Type Flow Switches
These are liquid type flow switches which are activated directly from the medium.
Oil Flow Switches
These flow switches work like other liquid flow switches. These do not wear easily.
Uses of Flow Switches
Flow switches can be used to heat water or boil, used to condition air, and treat water and swimming pools. For airflow switches, they can be used for air treatment purposes.
For the flow switches to work properly, you should always select the correct type, voltage, and function. Also, look for the best flow to use always, the best ones are Dwyer instrument flow switches, Rs Pro, and Key instruments flow switches.
