Unlimited Desire, Limited Production: "From Each According to His Needs" Is a False Proposition

In practice, it will inevitably exacerbate the gap between rich and poor — "wine and meat rot behind the vermilion gates while the frozen die in the streets" — only worse.

The Paradox of "From Each According to His Needs" Under Energy Conservation

The law of conservation of energy, as a fundamental rule of nature, has long made it clear that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another or transferred between different carriers, while its total amount remains constant. This iron law governs not only the operation of the physical world but also reveals the essential constraints on the distribution of social resources. A pure "from each according to his needs" model is fundamentally irreconcilable with this law, making it an unrealistic and unworkable mode of distribution.

The core logic of "from each according to his needs" is that individuals freely access resources based on their own demands, yet it ignores the intrinsic link between resources and energy. All usable resources in the world are essentially products of energy conversion, and their total amount is limited by energy supply and conversion efficiency. Whether it is the material goods needed for food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, or services in healthcare, technology, and other fields, every step from production to supply requires energy input: crop cultivation depends on solar energy conversion as well as human and mechanical energy consumption; industrial manufacturing needs energy to drive machinery; even the output of knowledge services consumes the biological energy of individuals and the accumulated intellectual energy of society. The total amount of this energy and these resources is not infinite — it is limited by the Earth's stored energy, the efficiency of capturing stellar energy, and technological conversion capabilities — and therefore has a definite upper limit. Meanwhile, human needs have the potential for unlimited expansion, from basic survival needs to personalized desires for enjoyment. There is no end to the boundary of desire. Trying to satisfy unlimited individual needs with finite energy and resources inherently violates the objective law of constant total energy, inevitably leading to resource overdraw and systemic imbalance.

From the perspective of real-world energy conversion, "from each according to his needs" also ignores the issue of conversion loss and efficiency. Energy conversion is never 100% efficient; some loss always occurs — for example, heat loss in power generation, friction loss in mechanical operation. Correspondingly, in social production, every step from raw material processing to final delivery incurs losses, so the actual effective resources available for distribution are far less than the initial total energy input. If a "from each according to his needs" system were implemented, individuals would have no need to consider the energy cost or losses associated with resource acquisition, which would easily lead to unrestrained taking, further aggravating energy waste and imbalance in conversion efficiency, and ultimately cause the entire social energy cycle to collapse — Just as in an ecosystem, when biological demands exceed the upper limit of energy supply, the entire ecosystem will collapse rapidly and head for complete destruction.

Certain specious social theories must be examined by the test of science.
